Trashtasticness aside, the 70s and 80s were dark days for the cocktail. Then in the mid-90s sickly sweetness and lurid blueness dialled down and top shelf booze got a look in. Here are a few of our favourites from the Second Golden Age that followed, brought up to date a little, but still with plenty of millennial exuberance.
|ALTOS TEQUILA, LEMONGRASS, COCONUT, LIME, THAI BASIL
Our tropical spin on the classic Tommy’s Margarita, the cocktail that helped make tequila a staple on cocktail lists worldwide from the 1990’s.
|SINGANI 63, EL TEQUILEÑO REPOSADO, PINK GRAPEFRUIT, LIME, ELDERFLOWER
The second golden age was a boom time for Latin spirits. With tequila, pisco and cachaça at the forefront. This forgotten classic makes use of a newer arrival, Bolivia’s grape-based singani.
|GLENMORANGIE X, LAPHROAIG, PEAR, LEMON, GINGER
One of a number of modern classics created at Milk & Honey New York in the early 00’s by bartender Sam Ross. Here amped up with ginger’s favourite bedfellow, the pear.
