STARTERS
Potted beef & bacon
Yorkshire puddings and onion gravy. The dish people order again without looking at the menu.
Heritage tomato salad
Whipped ricotta, sourdough croutons
Hawksmoor Caesar
Cantabrian anchovies, which give it a powerful umami punch.
MAINS
35-day dry-aged rump steak
Steakhouse salad. Cooked over screaming-hot coals, seasoned with nothing but Maldon sea salt, and left well alone. Upgrade to sirloin for £5 or fillet tail for £10.
Charcoal chicken Ana Mari
Roasted garlic, olive oil, lemon.
Roast hake
Vinegar peppers, fresh basil.
Ash-baked beetroots
Pickled fennel, horseradish crème fraîche. Not a consolation prize. We bake them whole in ash until the flavour concentrates, then cut through it with the fennel.
SIDES
One side comes with your main. Choosing is the hard part.
Beef dripping chips
Baked sweet potato
English lettuce salad
PUDDINGS
Sticky toffee sundae
Clotted cream ice cream, sticky toffee sponge, toffee sauce. The Guardian described it as coming “in a tall glass with two spoons, glistening with almost too much sauce”. We took that as a compliment.
Peanut butter shortbread
Salted caramel ice cream, Original Beans chocolate.
Blueberry and basil whipped cheesecake
Lemon granita, oat tuile, blueberry and basil compote.
