During the 19th century, British soldiers returning from India craved the exotic flavours they’d discovered in the Sub Continent – chutneys and other sweet-spicy treats.

Fred Garton, a savvy grocer from Nottingham, had the foresight to create a sauce, purely based on the soldiers’ memory of those flavours!

And so famous HP sauce, all tang and tamarind, was born.
