Steak & seafood in an old hops warehouse in Borough

Hops were warehoused and auctioned in this building long before it was a steak restaurant. It still shows: high ceilings, old timber, and a room that gets louder as the evening goes on and nobody minds.

We’re a few minutes from London Bridge station, right on the edge of Borough Market. Dry-aged beef over screaming-hot charcoal, Devon seafood off the morning boats, and cocktails worth arriving early for. The Thames is directly behind us if you fancy walking off a ribe-ye, and Tate Modern is ten minutes along the river.

Downstairs is the Cooks’ Room, comfortably one of the best private dining rooms in London. Why? It comes with its own kitchen and chef’s table. Get in touch to learn more

FOUR CUTS, SIDE BY SIDE

The Hawksmoor Steak Flight

Four steaks, one table, no arguments about which cut to order. The Steak Flight is a steak recce, and a really fun one: four different breeds from four different farms, served together so you can taste them against each other rather than wonder what you missed. Tasting four British breeds side by side, next door to one of the country’s great food markets. Seems about right.

Aberdeen Angus fillet, pure-bred, the breed that conquered the world. Clean, classic and beautifully tender. Wildfell wagyu sirloin, raised outdoors in Norfolk and finished on malt nuts and potato peelings, rich but still properly beefy. Hawksmoor Farms rump, from the network of British farms we’ve spent 20 years building, big on flavour with a little more chew. And Longhorn rib-eye, slow-reared and deeply beefy, the breed we started with two decades ago.

Best for four people, good for five. No special booking required, just order it at the table when you get here.

At Hawksmoor Borough, our steak and seafood restaurant beside Borough Market, for a limited time. Available across all our UK restaurants.

Lunch & Early Evening Set Menus

Lunch set menu 1/2/3 courses for £21/£26/£30
Early evening set menu 2/3 courses for £26/30

Two menus, two moods. One for the middle of the day, one for that hour when work lets go and the night hasn’t properly started.

Lunch is built for days when time’s tight but your standards aren’t. A quick one before you get on with it, or a slow one if the afternoon can spare you. Early evening asks for a little more and gives a little more back. Pre-theatre plans. A drink and a reset after work. A catch-up that feels like a treat without turning into a late one.

*Opening times and availability vary by restaurant, please check the restaurant’s menu pages for details.

Christmas at Hawksmoor Borough

Not the tinsel-wrapped, jingle-filled kind. The one that’s about good food, lovely company and just the right amount of festive spirit, in a former hops warehouse and auction hall a few steps from Borough Market, with the lights low and the room getting louder by the hour.

Festive sharing menus with generous feasting cuts, sides for the table and drinks packages to match. Everyone catered for, whatever they do or don’t eat. Downstairs, the Cooks’ Room seats 22 around a chef’s table with its own kitchen, which is about as close to Christmas at home as you can get without the cooking, cleaning or chaos. Upstairs, Hop House takes bigger groups semi-privately, or you can have the whole place to yourselves.

Parties of 15 or fewer can book straight away. For anything larger, drop us an enquiry. Do it sooner rather than later, the good dates go early.

Sunday Roast in London Bridge

Sunday roast is a Hawksmoor staple here, and ours has twice been voted the Best Sunday Lunch in the UK. A whole rump of dry-aged beef, cooked super slow, first on real charcoal and then in the oven. You asked for new cuts, so we happily obliged: swap your rump for a thick sirloin, slow-roasted, rested properly and carved to sit alongside the trimmings you know and love. Groups can go bigger still with a range of handsome sharing steaks.

Then the trimmings: beef-dripping roast potatoes, buttered greens, carrots and a Yorkshire pudding big enough to block out the sun, all ready to be doused in bone-marrow gravy.

We also heard the call for proper veggie options, not the polite alternative. Sundays are now complete with our Winslade Wellington, wrapped in golden pastry and served with roast potatoes (without beef dripping, of course), seasonal veg, slow-roasted garlic, light and fluffy yorkies and onion gravy. It’s probably one of the best vegetarian dishes we’ve ever made.

No starters necessary. And the Thames is right behind us for the obligatory post-roast saunter.

Private dining & events

Downstairs is the Cooks’ Room, comfortably one of the best private dining rooms in London. Why? It comes with its own kitchen and a chef’s table, so the chefs cook in front of you rather than somewhere out of sight. It seats up to 22, and it’s the only room in the country where you can have our Beef Feasting Menu, exclusive to Borough.

Upstairs, Hop House is our semi-private space, curtained off from the main restaurant and, very usefully, right next to the bar. It’s a little bigger than the Cooks’ Room and you keep some of the buzz coming off the dining room, which suits a party rather better than a boardroom does. For exclusive use, the whole restaurant takes up to 130.

Birthdays, work dinners, Christmas parties and the kind of long lunch that quietly becomes an evening. Download the brochure for capacities, menus and the rest of the detail, or send us an enquiry and we’ll take it from there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Hawksmoor Borough?

We’re at 16 Winchester Walk, London SE1 9AQ, on a quiet lane just behind Borough Market. London Bridge station is a five-minute walk, Tate Modern about ten minutes along the river, and the Thames is directly behind us if you fancy walking off a rib-eye.

What’s the nearest station to Hawksmoor Borough?

London Bridge, about five minutes on foot. It’s served by the Jubilee and Northern lines as well as National Rail, so most of London arrives here easily. Blackfriars and Southwark are both walkable too if your line suits them better.

Is there a dress code at Hawksmoor Borough?

No. Come as you are. We’ve had people in black tie and people straight off a bike, sometimes at the same table, and both are welcome. Hawksmoor is the sort of restaurant you can go to whether you’re in a suit or a pair of jeans.

Do I need to book a table at Hawksmoor Borough?

Booking is wise, especially at weekends and through December. That said, it doesn’t matter how busy we get, we always keep a few seats back for walk-ins. If you’ve just walked past and thought “yes, steak, definitely steak”, come in and we’ll see what we can do.

Does Hawksmoor Borough do Sunday roast?

Every Sunday, 12pm to 5pm. A whole rump of dry-aged beef cooked slowly over charcoal and then in the oven, with beef-dripping roast potatoes, buttered greens and a Yorkshire pudding big enough to block out the sun. Our roast has twice been voted the best Sunday lunch in the UK.

Is there a set menu at Hawksmoor Borough?

Yes. Our lunch set menu is one, two or three courses at £21, £26 or £30, and the early evening menu is two or three courses at £26 or £30. Same kitchen, same standards, slightly more nimble. Availability varies, so check before you come.

Can I book a private dining room at Hawksmoor Borough?

Yes, we have two. The Cooks’ Room downstairs seats up to 20 around a chef’s table and has its own kitchen, so the chefs cook in front of you. Hop House upstairs is semi-private and takes larger groups, and the whole restaurant can be booked for exclusive use.

Is Hawksmoor Borough wheelchair accessible?

Not currently, and we’re sorry about it. The building is a former hops warehouse and its layout works against us. Do call the team on 020 7234 9940 before you book and we’ll be completely straight with you about what we can and can’t do.

Is there parking near Hawksmoor Borough?

The closest car park is on Kipling Street, SE1 3RU, and the nearest Santander Bikes are at Park Street in Bankside. Honestly though, you’re five minutes from London Bridge station and the roads around the market are not a happy place to drive.
