Birthday Meals and Celebrations at Hawksmoor

Birthdays & celebrations at Hawksmoor

Birthdays that run long. Anniversaries worth the fuss. Engagements, promotions, Tuesdays that turned into something. Dry-aged steak over coals, martinis bracingly cold, and a room that knows what the evening is for.

TWO WAYS TO DO IT

Some celebrations want a table in the middle of the room, with the noise and the clatter and everyone looking over at your candles. Others want a door that closes. We do both.

For tables of up to 14, book online and tell us what you’re celebrating in the notes. We’ll take it from there.
For anything bigger, or for a private room of your own, send us an enquiry and one of our events team will come back to you with menus, spaces and a person to talk to. No hire fees and flexible minimum spends.

Either way, the beef, the bar and the people looking after you are exactly the same.

Somewhere worth turning a year older.

Birthday meals at Hawksmoor

A booth. Martinis poured bracingly cold before anyone’s taken their coat off. The steak chat, where the waiter talks you through each cut and what you’ll get out of it. Sides ordered for the table, because the “one starter, one main, one side” routine has never once been our style.
Then the sticky toffee sundae arrives in a tall glass with two spoons, and whoever said they weren’t having pudding picks one up anyway.
Ten of you, or six, or two. Tell us in the booking notes whose birthday it is and we’ll make sure the room knows.

Big ones and round ones

Eighteenths, twenty-firsts, thirtieths, and the ones with a zero on the end that people pretend not to mind. We’ve done a lot of them. The thing we’ve learnt is that the fuss should match the person, so tell us how much of it you want and we’ll pitch it right. Some tables want the whole room turning round. Some want a candle and nothing said out loud.

Birthday lunch

Not every birthday needs to be an evening. Our lunch and early evening set menus start at £20, same beef, same grill, same people, just a shorter window. Good for a birthday that has to fit around a working day.

Or go all in at Borough

Downstairs at Borough, in the old hops warehouse, there’s a private room with its own kitchen. Up to twenty-two of you around the table, chefs a few feet away, and the Beef Feast cooked in front of you as you eat it. Panzano tartare. Beef tea with bread and butter. Roast oysters, lobster and bone marrow. Then 35-day dry-aged prime rib with dripping chips and a steamed ox-cheek and tail pudding. Black Forest baked Alaska, coffee, Rolos.

It’s the most over the top way to have a birthday with us, and we mean that as a recommendation. Drop us a line here.

More than fourteen of you, or want four walls to yourselves? We’ve got private rooms for that, make an enquiry here.

SPECIAL OCCASIONS & GET-TOGETHERS

Engagements. Promotions. Retirements. Leaving dos. Passing something, finishing something, surviving something. New jobs, new houses, new babies, or the simple fact that eleven people managed to find one evening that worked.

We bloody love hosting these. Seriously. Two people for a booth-suited anniversary or a long table of twenty-two for a leaving do that turns into a late one, our eyes light up for all of it.

No one-size-fits-none menus. No cliché tunes, decorations or forced fun. Just very good food, drinks that arrive at the right moment, and a room that makes people say “d’you remember that time when…”

Low lighting. High standards. Two spoons.

Date nights & anniversaries

The Guardian described it better than we could: “A secluded, flatteringly-lit table for two, a hunk of rare ribeye with anchovy hollandaise and some triple-fried chips, then the clotted cream and sticky toffee pudding sundae, which comes in a tall glass with two spoons, glistening with almost too much sauce.”

Not our words. We’ll take them.

First dates, fortieth anniversaries, and the ones in between where the occasion is really just “we haven’t sat down together in a fortnight”. Our restaurants are built for lingering. A little low lighting, some tasteful music, laid-back service, and nobody hovering to turn your table.

Tell us if it’s an anniversary. We like knowing.

Private dining rooms for celebrations

Three things you get with every private room, whatever you’re marking:

Time. Nothing hurried. The room is yours for the evening, not for a slot.

Attention. Your own coordinator before the day, and a team on the night who flow in that lovely space between laid back and on the ball.

Good taste. Grass-fed, 35-day dry-aged beef from cows who’ve lived well. Seafood that’s genuinely sustainable. Vegetables that are only ever seasonal.

Every room has a name and a story behind it. The Cooks’ Room at Borough comes with its own kitchen and chef’s table, which makes it comfortably one of the best private rooms in London. The McLellan Room in Edinburgh seats thirteen around a circular table with a Lazy Susan, which has led to sticky toffee pudding roulette more than once.

Come as you are and let us take care of you. Just take your time.

Any occasion works on a Sunday

Sunday is the easiest celebration to organise. Nobody has to leave work early, and everybody’s already in the mood.

Roast is the whole point of Sunday, and we take the ritual seriously enough that every section of the kitchen has to pull together to get it out. Dry-aged beef. Roast potatoes cooked in the dripping. Yorkshire puds big enough to block out the sun. And gravy, unlimited, because there is never enough gravy.

Twice voted the best Sunday lunch in the UK by the Observer, which we bring up roughly once a year and are quietly very pleased about.

Birthdays, christenings, family catch-ups, or a group of friends who have decided the afternoon is now the evening. Sunday takes all of them.

Fair warning: this is not a nibble and dash.

Our food & drinks

Dry-aged British beef from farmers we know by name, cooked simply over screaming-hot coals with nothing on it but crunchy Maldon sea salt. Beef, salt, fire. When it’s that simple, the beef has to be the very best.

Around it: triple-cooked chips we have a whole training manual for, macaroni cheese made stringy with deliberately bad cheese, bone marrow gravy, anchovy hollandaise, and creamed spinach that regulars order without reading the menu.

Not in the mood for beef? There’s seafood landed at Brixham that morning, and a vegetarian option that isn’t an afterthought. We’ve said before that our Winslade Wellington is probably one of the best vegetarian dishes we’ve ever made, and we meant it.

At the bar, cocktails worth arriving early for. Our martini comes out of an insulated flask at minus 12°C, which is colder than it sounds and exactly as cold as it should be. Nobody has ever regretted having one before the menus land.

And the wine. Tell our team what you like and roughly what you’d like to spend, and they’ll find you something you’ll be glad you ordered. Ask them anything you want along the way. They love being asked.

Gifting

Some celebrations you host. Others you send.

A Hawksmoor gift card hands the decisions over: which restaurant, which date, whether it’s a quiet lunch for two or a Sunday that quietly turns into the evening. It’s digital, so it lands in minutes, which is handy if you’re the sort who remembers these things on the day itself. From £50, and good at any of our restaurants.

Which covers most of what the year throws at you. Valentine’s, when a table across from someone beats flowers that die by Friday. Mothering Sunday, and we feel strongly about this one, so make a fuss, and don’t forget the mother-in-law. Father’s Day for the dads who insist they don’t want anything and very obviously do. Graduations, anniversaries, new jobs, retirements, and the ones with no occasion attached at all. Then Christmas, when one less thing to think about is a present in itself.

And for the people who’d rather be at the stove than the table, there’s Hawksmoor: Restaurants & Recipes. Will and Huw on the restaurants, the beef and the drinks, with the recipes so they can have a proper go at it themselves. Unlike socks, it gets used.
